Masai Mara, Kenya, is at the heart of the Great Wildebeest Migration, a year-round journey that sees more than a million wildebeest, 350,000 gazelles and 200,000 zebras travel between Kenya’s national parks and the Serengeti in Tanzania. While most people are content to check this incredible event off of their bucket list with a jeep safari, a hot air balloon ride lets you fully grasp the herds’ astounding numbers. Watch the migration on the Mara plains between July and October, or keep an eye out for elephant calves stumbling alongside their elders in June and July, the months following Kenya’s wet season (when most births occur). No matter which species you spot, one thing is for sure: this is one ride even David Attenborough would envy.
